Your silliest writing habit.
« on: May 15, 2013, 10:18:41 AM »
There was this one short I was writing, I think it was for Movie Poet, and I was pretty proud of it when I was finished but there was this one word.  One word that just drove me crazy.  In my head, I realized it wasn't going to make or break the script.  However, I must have changed that word about 200 times before I submitted the script.   I've noticed that I do this often in my scripts - agonize over one word as if it's going to make all the difference in the world.

What silly writing habits do you have?

Probably the silliest is... not writing. I mean, I'll do anything to avoid sitting here and putting words on the page. Infamously, I used to twirl around the drawstring to the blinds over and over just to avoid writing. In a way, I've sort of outgrown that...

Easily my worst habit would be similar to Sean's... Not writing. Except I usually decide to ditch projects all together because I don't think they're good enough. I've started so many feature length scripts, but I always ditch them before the end.

In regards to the second part of yours, Daniel, we're also a bit alike. However, I don't ditch them because I don't think they're good enough (I'd write them anyway), I ditch them because a new idea pops in my head every three days or so. So, I stop what I'm doing and I move onto the new thing, write about 20 pages and move on again. It's kind of why it took three years to finish Christmas Story. Trying to kill that habit! =)

I can have a whole story plotted out it my head, but I can't even write one word unless I have a title. Without a title, I'm completely blocked.

When I find a decent piece of music that helps me write, usually something that I almost forget is going on in the background, I then play it over and over again whilst writing. A kind of meditation.

Alas the music changes and inevitably I lose interest in the over played piece

Not sure it influences my writing too much but I know that my current  MP entry was inspired by the song I aways already listening to. ::)

I picture the whole story in my head, but I focus mainly on the "A" story while throwing the "B" story and subplots aside as I write.

Firstly, it's good to see all the SS crowd here. Can we ban a few of the annoying SS members so they can't follow us??? Hee Hee just kidding.

Sometimes I write an action line and the thoughts in my head sound different to the words on the paper. Hope you know what I mean by this.

Regards Alex

Welcome Alex, good to see you found your way over Writer Arena.   We'll try to keep the temperament of the forum somewhere between SS and MP.   And, yes, I know "it sounded better in my head" very well.

1. My house is not a quiet house.  Two dogs, I couldn't tell ya how many people... so, I require
mood music that is genre appropriate to what I am writing... and skullcandy earbuds.

2. A nice hot mug of coffee...Folgers black, Keurig flavors, doesn't matter.  Sometimes I don't even finish
one, sometimes I down five or six...but I have to see that mug sitting there on the desk.

You'd be on the list of annoying people ;D ;D

Welcome aboard, Alex. Good to see you made it here.

I know exactly what you mean when you say things sound better in your head. I get it with writing all the time. I also get it with comebacks in arguments, jokes, essay writing, texting, facebook posts etc, etc...

Yep, sounds better in my head and then I torment myself over getting the wording spot on so it matched what I'm thinking. Grrrrr.... That's what writing is all about I guess.
