Saving Mr Banks

It's a really terrible title for a biopic-ification of the making of Mary Poppins, with limited recognition of said Banks character and the fact it undercuts a climactic emotional moment.    Still, this Disney production avoids corporate whitewash thanks to Emma Thompson's relentlessly cold portrayal of author P.L. Travers, although Tom Hanks is all warmth and understanding as a pursuing Walt Disney.    Together the duo lend undue weight to a story that leans hard on pop psychology and flashback neatness, and -- despite Thompson's enjoyable efforts -- never feels as though it captures the truth of a hard, complex woman.
